Beaches in West Virginia are few and far between since it’s not a coastal state. However, we do have several large lakes with beachy areas, and if you’re looking for a beach with clear water in West Virginia, well then look no further than Sutton Lake. This hidden gem is one of the most beautiful swimming spots in the state, and easily worth a road trip from any corner of the state. Let’s take a closer look.
Located just upstream of Sutton is a 1,520 acre reservoir called Sutton Lake. Located in both Webster and Braxton Counties, the lake began construction in 1956 and was completed in 1961.

The beach itself is a circular outcropping of land thrust into the waters of the lake. Visitors to the beach are welcome to swim in the waters or to lay down a beach towel and soak in the rays of the sun.

Around the beach is a safety ring that marks the designated swimming area for visitors, to protect them and keep them separated from boaters that will pass the swimming area at any given time. Since the beach is immediately adjacent to the marina, the possibility of passing motorboats is pretty much guaranteed.

And if at any point you feel like moving through the water faster than your limbs can manage, a quick walk to the marina is all it takes to rent your own boat, canoe, paddle board, etc. You can even rent a houseboat if you so wish.

All this can be accomplished at the Sutton Lake Marina, which also sells fishing equipment, bait, snacks, drinks and various marine supplies.

During your visit to Sutton Lake, an afternoon on the beach is only one of many things you can do at the lake, as the beach is only a small portion of the 44 miles of shoreline surrounding the lake.

Aside from fishing and boating, there are three campgrounds adjacent to the lake, two of which have boat ramps.

If you are looking for a great for a day at the beach, and any other number of water-related activities, especially fishing, Sutton Lake is the perfect place for you.
