West Virginia Has 275 Waterfalls And You’ll Want To Visit Them All

No matter where you are in West Virginia, chances are good you are near some fabulous waterfalls. There are approximately 275 waterfalls in the state, which means the numbers are in your favor! While this list cannot feature all of them, here are some of the most beautiful waterfalls in West Virginia worth chasing:

1. Sandstone Falls

This is the largest waterfall on the New River and spans a section of the river that stretches 1,500 feet across. The falls are located on River Road near the city of Hinton. We especially love the short-and-sweet hike to this beautiful waterfall!

2. The Falls of Hills Creek

The falls, located near Richwood, is a series of three waterfalls accessible by a series of boardwalks and staircases built in the woods. The largest waterfall is 63 feet high, the tallest and clearest falls in the state. The Falls of Hills Creek is located at Hill Creek Falls Road in Hillsboro.

3. Elakala Falls

Elakala Falls, located in Blackwater Falls State Park, plunges into water about 200 feet deep. This waterfall is the result of the waters of Shay Run plunging into Blackwater Gorge.

4. Blackwater Falls

The titular waterfall of Blackwater Falls State Park is a 57-foot cascade near Davis. This waterfall is accessible by a series of wooden steps that leads to a viewing deck. It is widely regarded as the most photographed fall in West Virginia. Blackwater Falls is located at 1584 Blackwater Lodge Rd. in Davis.

5. Cathedral Falls

Cathedral Falls is one of the highest falls in West Virginia and is easily accessible from U.S. Route 60, one mile east of Gauley Bridge. The cascade falls into a natural amphitheater, which is where the name Cathedral originally stems.
